What’s Supervision?

Today, professional supervision is widely required and used by employers to support those working as employees or volunteers in ‘helping roles’ - from health to social work, youth work to church ministry, community workers to emergency responders.

Supervision…

  • is a dynamic professional development tool to assist you in your current role

  • enables your ongoing learning, personal reflection, and empowerment

  • encourages your professional self-care, stress management, and sustainability

  • helps to ensure that you work to best practice standards.

It’s based on a mutually respectful, negotiated agreement (contract) between two professionals working collaboratively together in a positive, supportive process. Supervision typically involves meeting together regularly at an agreed time and place. It needs to be in person but can also be arranged via video link.

Supervision involves in-depth discussion on topics raised by the supervisee – usually work-related issues that have arisen, challenging events that have happened they’d like to work through, or topics they want to helpfully explore. The supervisee sets the agenda. Sessions are typically focused and productive.

I recommend monthly supervision, or 6-weekly in very busy times. The session can run flexibly between 60-90 minutes, as is most useful for the supervisee.

Outside of sessions, I make myself available for phone calls, texts or emails in between scheduled times, if helpful and needed for support.

I offer supervision from my home office in Miramar, Wellington. Another venue can be agreed, if needed. Or, as noted, we can use a digital platform, such as Skype or Zoom.

Contact me for my current rate per flexible 60-90 minute session. This also covers being available in between sessions, as needed. Cancellations need to be advised with 24 hours’ notice, unless in exceptional circumstances.

I have personally experienced both bad and good supervision. I am committed to offering the style of supervision that suits each supervisee best and which will make a helpful, practical difference to the standards of their work practice and to their professional wellbeing and sustainability.

You are welcome to contact me to talk about supervision or to arrange an initial session.
